The New York Mets were active this offseason, signing and trading for several top-tier players. This came after one of the worst collapses in MLB history. One of their most notable moves was acquiring starter Freddy Peralta.

“The New York Mets’ winterlong pursuit of a front-line starting pitcher ended late Wednesday when they acquired All-Star Freddy Peralta, as well as fellow right-hander Tobias Myers, from the Milwaukee Brewers for Brandon Sproat and Jett Williams, two of their top prospects,” ESPN’s Jorge Castillo wrote.
Another move they expected to pay off was signing veteran reliever Luis García. However, FanSided’s Zachary Rotman believes it has become the Mets’ biggest offseason regret.
“The offseason changes the New York Mets made to their lineup and starting rotation generated most of the headlines, but the bullpen has a new look, too. Devin Williams and Luke Weaver, the big-name additions to the ‘pen, have been mostly as advertised, but the same cannot be said about Luis Garcia, who has really struggled. Garcia has allowed six runs (five earned) on 10 hits in 5.1 innings of work in five appearances. He’s allowed multiple runs in two of his five outings, and has allowed multiple hits in three of his five appearances. Perhaps what’s most concerning is that his average fastball velocity (93.9 mph), is down by three mph from where it was in 2025 (96.5 mph),” team” rel=”nofollow noopener” Rotman wrote.
The Mets ultimately acted on those struggles, designating García for assignment on Sunday morning.

“Barely two weeks into the season, the Mets designated veteran right-hander Luis García for assignment on Sunday. García was one of three relievers the team signed to guaranteed Major League contracts over the offseason, along with Devin Williams and Luke Weaver,” MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo wrote.
New York made the early decision to move on from García, but there is a downside. His contract was guaranteed, player/_/id/16053/luis-garcia” rel=”nofollow noopener” meaning the Mets still owe him $1.75 million this season.
For García, it’s a disappointing start to the year, though another team could give him an opportunity. The Mets, however, determined he was not what their bullpen needed, highlighting just how much they regretted the signing.
